Lambeth Conference Updates

Check each week for Lambeth Conference updates at: http://www.episcopalchurch.org/95270_ENG_HTM.htm.

Office Volunteers

St. Alban’s is in need of volunteers to serve in the main office as receptionists. The primary need is for phone-answering and greeting of visitors and delivery persons. Some computer experience would be helpful but not necessary. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Eric Gustafson at 202-363-8286 extension 204 or ericg@st-albans-parish.org.

Grate Patrol Seeks New Faces for Fun, Fellowship & Service

For those of you who have wondered about when to check out Grate Patrol, let me tell you that NOW is a good time. We have a stalwart group who resolutely prepare 160 sandwich lunches once a month in our kitchen, the fourth Friday of every month at 1:00 which are then distributed by St. Albans Youth in a Salvation Army truck to the homeless around town. We are in need of NEW volunteers to prepare the lunches during the summer months and the year ahead. Come and meet us and join the fun, fellowship and service. Contact Wendy Garner at 202-669-1758 or wendygarner@earthlink.net or Susan Morris at 301-718-9379

Healing Ministers and Laying on of Hands

On a regular basis during several of the worship services, healing ministers are available to join you in prayer. You can be joined in confidential prayer on behalf of yourself or another in gratitude or in concern. Healing ministers are located on the sides of the sanctuary during the communion, where you may join them in prayer before or after receiving communion. "Come forward." "Stretch out your hands." (Mark 3:3-5)

Memorial and Commemorative Altar Flowers

The Flower Guild seeks donations for altar flowers given in memory of a family member or friend, and for flowers commemorating achievements and events – “on the occasion of,” such as birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and the like, for those living. Flowers also can be given simply to honor someone. Please contact Adelaide Brown at 703-845-7975 for information and donation requests.

More Stephen Ministers for St. Alban's

During the summer months, Stephen Leaders David Johnson and Jo Turner will meet with parishioners who are interested in serving as Stephen Ministers.  Brochures and the 2008 training schedule are available on the narthex bulletin board and the Wade Room information table.  For more information or an application, contact David or Jo in the church office, extensions 210 and 219 respectively.  We'd love to talk to you!

Only 2 EFM Spaces Available!-EFM

Two spaces have been reserved for entering students in the University of the South EFM seminars that meet Mondays beginning in September, but immediate registration is required.  One space may still be available for Daytime EFM.  For information, contact Prof. Pat Bleicher at (703) 532-9156 or email PBleicher@aol.com.

Spare Fare

Have any spare fare? If you have a metro pass with left over fare, please bring the pass with you on Sundays and place the them in the offertory plate. Ushers will separate them from other offerings. Clergy and staff will then distribute the "spare fare" cards to our drop-in guests who need help with transportation.
When you buy groceries, remember those who are without food in DC. Bring non-perishable items to church on Sundays and place them in the large basket. These items go to Samaritan Ministry, a non-profit organization offering services such as housing and employment counseling, coaching, and food assistance.

Summer Break

All Journey to Adulthood (J2A) groups and The Teen Service are on break for the summer.

Summer Choir

All adults and teens are invited to join the choir as you're able this summer, June 8 through August 31. Rehearsals are at 9:15 am in church to prepare for the 10:30 service. Come when you're in town or just when you feel like it. Summertime...and the singing is easy. Questions? Contact Sonya Sutton at 202-363-8286, ext. 205, SonyaS@st-albans-parish.org.

Summer Worship Schedule

Throughout the summer months, our Sunday schedule is changed slightly. Please make note of this schedule from May 25 through Labor Day weekend.

8:00 am           Holy Eucharist
9:15 am           The Alban Course
                           (Warner Rectory living room)
10:30 am         Holy Eucharist (with Children’s Chapel –
                           childcare available also)
11:45 am         Sunday Forum (in Nourse Hall)
5:30 pm           Holy Eucharist
At the 10:30 a.m. Eucharist this summer we will sing more parts of the Eucharistic Rite. These parts include Gospel responses, the Memorial Acclamation in the midst of the Eucharistic Prayer, the Great Amen that concludes the Eucharistic Prayer, the Lord’s Prayer, and the Anthem sung at the Breaking of the Bread. St. Alban’s is a parish where music is a central part of our common prayer and worship. We hope this additional music in our liturgy will add to the richness of our worship life.
Also, at the 10:30 a.m. Eucharist, we will use an inclusive language Eucharistic Prayer from the Episcopal Church’s Enriching our Worship series. The Church and our own Bishop have authorized this Eucharistic Prayer for trial use. The Church grows liturgically as we try new liturgies that proclaim and celebrate our ancient faith. After you have had an opportunity to worship this summer, please let the clergy know your thoughts and experiences with this trial liturgy. We can then share our collective thoughts with the national Church’s Commission on Liturgy & Music.

Time & Talent Pledging for the new Program Year (September 08 – August 09)

Equally important to our financial pledge each year is pledging of our time and talent to the mission and ministry of St. Alban’s Parish. Time & Talent Pledging may be new to some people, so it might be helpful for you to read further for a thorough description of how it works.

The best and easiest way to pledge is to go to our parish website and click on the link for Time & Talent Pledging. Once there, review and pray over where God may be calling you to serve in the coming year. Check those ministries to which you feel called to serve and submit the pledge. You will receive an email confirmation of your pledge. Also, the leaders of the ministries to which you have pledged will also receive an email with your contact information indicating you have made your pledge of time & talent to that ministry. Those leaders will then be in touch with you before September of this year to help incorporate you into the ministries to which you have pledged.

If you prefer to pledge by using a hard copy, then those can be found in the Wade Room off Nourse Hall. Once completed, staff and volunteers will enter your pledge into our system and ministry leaders will contact you as described above.

Time & Talent Pledging is a way to open up the ministry of the parish to as many people as possible. It is a good way to be as inclusive as possible and to increase the number of people active in all our many and varied ministries. It is also an important means for each of us to contribute our part to the ministry of the whole parish.

Please take a few minutes to pledge your time and talent for the coming program year.

Youth Acolytes

Youth, 4th through 12th grade, serve as acolytes carrying the crosses, torches and banner in processions, and assisting at the altar. They bring beauty and meaning to the congregation’s experience of the service. In addition, this is an excellent opportunity to learn responsibility and leadership. Youth acolytes serve at the 9:15 service on Sundays and at other special services throughout the year. A training session is provided, usually held in the early fall. Contact: Donna Palmer, 301-941-1223 or dpalmer@cq.com.

As such, he is charged with staying in touch with all parishes in the diocese about issues that impact the Latino community. His goal is to visit each of those parishes regularly. He will also join us as celebrant at the 10:30 service that morning.

IDEAS ALIVE at 11:45 -- Faith, Elections, and Public Policy

Sunday, August 10, 11:45 AM
By popular demand, we will have another summer discussion of how to live as a faithful Christian during an election year in Washington. Our panelists will be Gray Maxwell, current Legislative Director for Senator Ben Cardin of Maryland, who has worked for eight senators from both sides of the aisle; Stephanie Kinney, who observed many changes of administration from her posts in the State Department; and Nathanael Stice, who came to Washington two years ago as an intern at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, is currently working on the 2008 campaign for the Virginia Democratic Party, and wishes to work in public policy after November. Join us for what promises to be an interesting and far-reaching discussion like the one we had on July 6.
