St. Alban’s is a founding member of this coalition of congregations and civic organizations in Ward 3. Committed to addressing the issues of homelessness, the council works with congregationally-based shelters (like our own Crossroads Shelter), and operates group homes and a day referral center. Volunteers are involved in shelter ministries, providing food and blankets on a regular van run, fundraising and working with clients. Contact: Anne Wiebe at 301-229-3376 or wiebeca@aol.com

Crossroads Shelter

St. Alban’s provides a structured, supervised living space in the lower level of Satterlee Hall for four men from mid-April through September. Our residents are referred by the Community Council for the Homeless at Friendship Place or Samaritan Ministry of Greater Washington. During the months of operation, our shelter needs many volunteers to provide breakfast foods, dinner, and to coordinate the meal schedule. There are many opportunities for service. Contact: Peter Spalding, 202-337-0157 (h) or pet202@aol.com.

Hope for Recovery

Our mission is to provide a caring presence to address alcohol, drug abuse and other addictions and to reduce the stigma and shame that accompany the disease of addiction. We offer educational programs, confidential consultations, an annual Recovery Sunday celebration, and a 12-Step Eucharist on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 pm. We welcome anyone who would like to join our ministry. Contacts: Sally Craig, 202-362-7192; Linda Bickford, 202-966-2210.

Interreligious Council of Northwest Washington

Composed of representatives from St. Alban’s, the Church of the Annunciation (Roman Catholic), and the Washington Hebrew Congregation, as well as occasional representation from Muslim, Sikh, and other faith communities, the Council meets for monthly conversation on a variety of issues. It also sponsors the annual Kristallnacht Remembrance Service (usually in early November each year), the Community Thanksgiving Day Dinner, and other events. Photo: Op ShopOpportunity Shop

Open Tuesday through Saturday, 9:30 am–3:00 pm, the Opportunity Shop (affectionately known as the Op Shop) sells donations of clothing, housewares, jewelry, art, books, and surprising memorabilia. More than 70 volunteers staff the store or work “backstage.” It can be found by entering the 3001 Wisconsin Avenue entrance to the basement of Satterlee Hall.

The Op Shop raises approximately $150,000 annually which is then dispersed to those in need by the Board of Workers of St. Alban’s. This is a primary source of funds for parish outreach to our community, nation, and the world. We also play an important role as a fun and friendly gathering place in our neighborhood. Bring your donations, shop in our store for bargains, and join “the motley crew” of volunteers. The Op Shop is closed during August while we clean and restock.

Do join us for just one morning or afternoon shift per week! Call our personnel director, Bob Gemmill 202-362-6784, or Sallie Lewis 703-448-1997.

The Chronicle

The Chronicle is our parish newsletter, published the first of each month, with special issues at Easter and Christmas. Its purpose is to encourage broader communications across this diverse community and to share stories of our faith. If you are interested in writing or contributing in any way, we are always looking for new and creative ideas to reach fellow parishioners and others who receive our newsletter.

Sunday @ St. Alban’s

Sunday @ St. Alban’s is a weekly e-mail sent by the Parish Administrator. The e-mail lists the coming Sunday’s schedule, announcements and prayer list. Those who join the list also receive emails from the Parish Office regarding schedule changes, such as weather-related closings and other time-sensitive information. To join (or be removed from) the Sunday@St. Alban’s list, send an e-mail to AlbansEmail@st-alban-parish.org. In the subject line, please indicate ADD TO LIST or REMOVE. We do not abuse or share your e-mail address with others. Those who receive these emails cannot reply to all.

Because we are a dynamic church community, this Parish Ministries and Activities Book cannot capture all that we are engaged in on a daily or weekly basis. Worship services, new programs and special events are always evolving. And, there is an abundance of church liturature and history we haven’t the room to print. For all this, consult this site for some of what you won’t find in the Parish Ministries and Activities Book, such as weekly updated news and events, lectionary for the coming Sunday, and sermons preached at St. Alban’s for the past three years
